How We Do What We Do. An Addendum to County and Project Director Guidelines.
The Mississippi Genealogy and
History Network (MSGHN) has but one goal embodied in our mission
statement; it is to "Recognize the significant contributions
made by Mississippi's pioneers and their descendants to the
growth of the United States of America, and to foster
appreciation for [Mississippi's] rich historical and cultural
past..."
To accomplish this mission, we
recruit only the best researchers and web developers from around
the nation to develop and post individual county and state level
websites to which the organization provides links assisting our
visitors in easily finding their own research targets.
These dedicated researchers are
committed to providing the latest genealogy and historical data
available and their research is ongoing, current and relevant.
To assist these individuals MSGHN provides free, dedicated web
space on which they may post their information, assistance with
all phases of website development and will soon implement a
training program designed to further assist our researchers with
their web development and genealogy research.
Although MSGHN was created and
organized for the members, in order to reduce the controversy
ordinarily associated with management issues, MSGHN is governed
by an Executive Council consisting of five members. These
members are appointed for life or until they retire or are
removed by the Executive Council. They have a fiduciary responsibility to
MSGHN and are responsible for the generation and expenditure of
funding in support of the membership. All funding raised
is committed to the support of MSGHN and is generally generated
through the personal contributions of the Executive Council.
From this council is selected the
three standing officers of the organization. A president, know
as the State Director, chairs the council and leads our efforts
on behalf of MSGHN, an Executive Officer, known as the Assistant
State Director, who leads the ongoing activities of MSGHN on a
day to day basis, and an Operations Officer, known as the
Webmaster, who is responsible for all phases of MSGHN
information management. These officers are selected and
appointed by the Executive Council and serve at the pleasure of
the Council.
The activities of the Executive
Council are generally conducted separately and never impinge on
the activities of the County and Project Directors. Since the
Council appoints its' own officers there is never an election,
never any political campaigns, speeches or requirements to vote
placed upon the County and Project Directors. This leaves them
free to focus on their mission, providing the most current, free
information to our visitors seeking their ancestors and the
regional history that provides content to the lives that are so
important to the development of the culture of the state.
In fact, once an individual is
established as a new MSGHN member, the policy of the Executive
Council is simply "hands off." The Council will not interfere
with the development and posting of information to the website(s)
of the new member unless assistance is requested, as long as the
website(s) remain in compliance with the few, simple
requirements of the organization.
Further, to facilitate
communications between the County and Project Directors, a list
server is provided so that all Directors can send email messages
regarding new genealogy and history finds to others on the list.
Membership in this program is optional. Infrequent
communications between the MSGHN leadership and the Directors
are supported via a second, membership required list, however,
the contact email addresses of all program and project sponsors
are published within the pages of their respective
program/project websites and direct communication is always the
preferred method, bypassing the lists entirely.
If you are considering becoming a
member of the Mississippi Genealogy and History Network, be
advised that our standards are high, the focus is always on the
information you offer to assist your website visitors and you
will be expected to do a thorough job in researching, developing
and posting your information. However, regardless of your skill
level in web development, we will help you, as needed, to
develop the skills, abilities and knowledge required to present
a fine, well organized, and attractive presentation to those
most important visitors to your site.
To become a member of MSGHN, you
must make an informal application to the Executive Council. In
the normal course of events, applications are first reviewed by
our State Director. However, you may submit a request by sending
an email to any member of the Executive Council using the email
addresses below or you may send your request through any one of
our current member Directors at their affiliated website(s). It
will be forwarded to the appropriate person within the
organization and you will be contacted promptly.
Please include your name, the email
address you would like the Executive Council to use when
communicating with you and the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) of
any website(s) that you may already have online. If you do not
currently maintain a website, this is not a disqualifying factor.
Also, if you are not interested in sponsoring a County website,
but have an idea for a special project about some aspect of the
cultural or historical development of Mississippi, your ideas
will be considered as well.
It would also be appreciated if you
would include a statement indicating why you are interested in
becoming a member. You may send your application directly to the
Executive Council by using one of the email addresses below.
